I was invited by the Alberta Colleges and Institutes Professors Associations to speak at their 2026 conference in Jasper this week. They asked me to speak on labour rights, worker advocacy, and the present landscape for Alberta's post-secondary worker. Here are my remarks. Hey, fellow employees. My name is Kim Siever.
Today, I wish to talk with you about labour rights, worker advocacy, and the current landscape for Alberta's post-secondary workers. Right before I enter into my remarks, I wished to note that I have asthma, which makes it challenging to speak for extended periods, so if you hear me coughing or clearing my throat, that's why.
I also have arthritis, which makes it tough to mean longer durations, which is why I am taking a seat. I thought I 'd begin by talking a bit about The Alberta Employee and how it got to where it is today, as I believe this journey is straight associated to this presentation topic.
We were just days into the COVID-19 pandemic, and a lot of the public spaces had been bought closed down by the provincial government. At the time, I was a freelancer operating in social networks management and copy modifying. Many of my clients had physical areas, which means they lost consumers.
For the very first time in 7 years, I had no work. I was making an application for tasks and looking for new customers somehow, however in the meantime, I appeared to have had a little time on my hands. One day during this duration, I observed a Twitter conversation about a land offer concerning Crown land in Southern Alberta, and it ignited my interest.
I compiled what I found into a story and published it on a blog I had at the time. About a week later, I composed another article that was also quite popular in which I eliminated some misconceptions the UCP kept utilizing to discredit Alberta physicians.
People had registered as Patreon supporters over the previous couple of months since they valued the work I had been doing in that area, and I was making about $75 a month as a result. Well, this newly found traffic enhanced my Patreon customers to the point that I realized if I stopped trying to find a job and stopped searching for customers and rather redirected all my energy and time into this, I could get enough customers to do it full-time.
And The Alberta Employee was born. Well, not rather. When I switched to doing journalism full-time, I actually branded it as Kim Siever News, and I concentrated on covering politics. The UCP had been in power for about a year, and there seemed to be a lot to discuss, with debunking claims they made, providing context to cherry-picked media releases, or even composing the periodic investigative piece to expose what appeared to be shady practices.
